Serving in Guatemala

August 7, 2019

Each year, EC students participate in various camps and missions during their summer vacation. A group of students headed to Guatemala this past week with Mission Youth Detroit and the Good Girl Comeback to serve the people and bring them the message of God's love through their service. Everest formation coordinator, Miss Rose Wieber, as well as school chaplain Fr. Thomas Salazar, LC, accompanied the group.

During their week there, the missionaries based out of Finca El Carmel worked on various projects. They spent time with children in an orphanage, playing games with them, doing crafts, and dancing and laughing with them. Father Hanabel who ministers to the people of Guatemala met with the missionaries and shared with them his story and the history of the church in the area. It wasn't all fun and games for the missionaries though; they worked hard throughout the week to rebuild the house of a local woman as well as to build a sidewalk to the site of a new church.

The missionaries were full of joy but also reflected on the mysterious ways that God could use their simple efforts to bring joy and love to the local community. There was certainly a lot of joy as the woman moved into her new home.
