The Art of History

September 6, 2019

The sixth-grade students spent some time creating mosaics after seeing many examples throughout their studies of the Byzantine Empire. Students worked together and were able to create some awesome mosaics.

By studying art in history, the students are able to understand much more about the past than a simple relating of events or dates. They gained appreciation for the values of the Byzantine culture as expressed throughout their art. Students also expressed things that are important to them through their own mosaics. Some students chose to depict religious images as well as image that reflect beauty. There was even some football rivalry demonstrated among the designs.

By creating their own artwork based on a technique used in history, students are also able to practice the skill of applying their knowledge to real life examples and relate it to their own lives.
